Which size for yard waste?
Green waste is the bulkiest material on the site for its weight, and the two ways to keep the box small are cutting and stacking. Limbs cut to 4-foot lengths and laid in the same direction take a third of the room the same limbs take thrown in whole; fronds stacked flat pack down; a hedge chopped into sections does the same. Even cut, a yard that got away from someone is a lot of cubic yards. A weekend of trimming, one tree's worth of limbs or a hedge line fits a 15 yard. The 20 yard, 16 feet long and 5 feet tall, is the box for a whole-lot cleanup, a fence line plus the overgrowth behind it, or a couple of trees taken down. A large lot cleared back to the property line, or land being cleared for a pool or an addition, is a 30.

What is heavy in a yard?
Not the leaves. A cubic yard of loose branches and fronds weighs a few hundred pounds, and a 20 yard full of cut brush is usually under a ton, well inside the 2 tons allowance. Green wood and wet fronds after a rain weigh more, and palm trunks are surprisingly dense, but a green-waste box almost never runs over.
The yard turns heavy the moment the ground is involved. Sod is soil with grass on it: a pallet of it is about a ton, and stripping 500 square feet of lawn produces roughly two tons of it. Dirt runs about a ton and a half per cubic yard, more when wet. A stump with its root ball can be several hundred pounds by itself, and the rock, pavers, edging blocks and the old concrete birdbath that come out of a bed are the same heavy debris as a slab. All of it goes in a 10 yard, loaded partway and below the marked fill line, where heavy debris is accepted at no handling charge; in a 15 yard or larger the same material carries a $150 charge and a large box full of it is more than the truck can lift. When is the curb enough?
Every county in the service area collects yard waste at the curb on a regular schedule, and for a normal week of trimming that is the answer: bag the leaves, bundle the branches to the length your county asks for, and put it out on the day. The rules on bundle length, bag type and how much per week vary by county and city and change from time to time, so your county's site is the source; they are not restated here. A dumpster earns its price when the pile is bigger than several weeks of curb pickups, when the material is mixed with fence, screen or lumber that curbside will not take, when the yard has to be clear by a date, or when the lot has never been cleared and the pile would sit at the curb for a month. What yard material cannot go in?
Branches, limbs, palm fronds, hedges, shrubs, leaves, grass, bamboo, fence panels and posts, lattice, screen, lumber and the old play set are all accepted. The refused list is short.
- Pesticides, herbicides, fertilizer, pool chemicals and their containers: hazardous and refused; the county's household hazardous waste program takes them
- Gasoline, two-stroke mix and oil, and the mower, trimmer or chainsaw with fuel in them: drain first or leave out
- Propane cylinders from the grill or the patio heater, and tires from the wheelbarrow or the trailer
- Dirt, sod, stumps and rock in anything bigger than a 10 yard: not refused, but a heavy-debris handling charge and a load the truck may not be able to lift
- Nothing above the marked fill line: brush springs back, so pack it down and tie the load off if the box is full
Timing, placement and how to order
A yard cleanup is a weekend, and the 7-day rental covers it with a week to spare for the parts that are not done. Order the box for the morning you start; a request in by 2pm is usually delivered the same day inside the core area, and pickup comes in the 7-day window after you call.
