Renting a Dumpster vs. Making Dump Runs in Your Truck

A 20-yard dumpster from Javi's Dumpster Services holds about 6 pickup-truck loads and costs $495 with delivery, pickup and 2 tons of disposal included. Making those runs yourself means 6 round trips to the landfill, a gate fee on every load, fuel, tarps and most of a weekend. Past two or three loads, one container is usually cheaper and always faster. Call (407) 860-8640.

How many pickup loads is a dumpster?

Javi's sizes every box in pickup-truck loads because most people have filled a bed and know what one looks like. The last column divides the delivered price by those loads: what each truckload-equivalent costs when the container does the hauling and the disposal tonnage is already paid.

Per pickup-load equivalent
SizePrice, deliveredDisposal included≈ pickup loadsPer pickup-load equivalent
10 yard$3751 ton3$125
15 yard$4501.75 tons5$90
20 yard$4952 tons6$83
30 yard$6503 tons9$72
40 yard$8004 tons12$67

What does a dump run actually cost?

More than the gate fee. Every trip is loading the bed by hand, tarping it so nothing blows off on the highway, the drive to the landfill or transfer station, the line at the scale, the fee for that load, unloading by hand, and the drive back. Landfill gate fees and hours vary by facility and by material, and none of that is published here because it changes; what does not change is that you pay it again on every load, and a heavy load of tile or concrete is priced by weight at the scale exactly as it is in a dumpster, except that you are the one lifting it twice.

Then there is the truck. Six loads of demolition debris in a pickup bed is six loads of scratched paint, a strained tailgate and a nail in a tire waiting to happen.

How much of my weekend does it take?

Be honest about the round trip. Loading a bed properly, tarping, driving, waiting, unloading and driving back is rarely under an hour and a half, and often more once the line at the scale builds on a Saturday. Six loads is a full weekend, both days, for one person, and the pile is still in the garage on Friday night. A 20 yard dropped Friday morning gets loaded as the work happens, sits there while you sleep, and leaves when you call. The 7 days included are more time than any weekend.

When do dump runs make sense?

Sometimes they do, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise.

  • One load, maybe two: a few branches, a mattress, the leftovers from a garage sale
  • You already own the truck, the tarp and the Saturday, and enjoy the drive
  • The site is somewhere a roll-off truck cannot back into, and carrying the debris out to the street is the only option
  • Material a facility takes at little or no cost, where the gate fee is not the issue, only the time

When does the container win?

From the third load on. A cleanout, a remodel, a roof, a fence tear-out, anything with concrete or dirt in it. The 10 yard at $375 is about 3 pickup loads and takes the heavy material that would ruin a truck bed; the 20 at $495 is a whole house. Every price includes the disposal tonnage and both truck trips, and the only add-on that ever applies to a normal cleanout is $83 per ton if the load runs over, as the cost page spells out. Compare that to a per-load gate fee and an odometer, and the container wins on money by the third trip and on time from the first.

Is there a middle option?

Yes. If the pile is more than one run but you have no crew and no week to spare, junk removal sends a crew that loads and hauls it in an afternoon, quoted by the job. And if you are choosing between two sizes of container, 10 vs 20 is the comparison that settles most cleanouts.

Questions people ask

How many pickup loads fit in a 10-yard dumpster?

About 3. The 20 yard is about 6, the 30 about 9 and the 40 about 12.

Is it cheaper to rent a dumpster or haul it myself?

For one or two loads, hauling it yourself is usually cheaper if you already have the truck. From about three loads on, a dumpster is cheaper once you count gate fees, fuel and time, and the 1 ton to 4 tons of disposal is already in the price.

Do I pay the landfill separately with a dumpster?

No. Disposal tonnage is included in the price for each size. Only weight past the allowance is billed, at $83 per ton from the scale ticket.

What if I only have three or four loads?

That is 10-yard territory: $375 delivered, 1 ton included, and it takes concrete, dirt and tile at no extra charge. It is the size that turns a weekend of runs into one phone call.

Can I load the dumpster over a few days?

Yes. 7 days are included and 30 is the maximum. Load it as the work happens and call when it is done.
