Which size for a deck or a shed?
A 12-by-16 deck is about 200 square feet of decking, the joists under it, a railing and the stairs: roughly 3 to 4 pickup loads once it is unscrewed and stacked, more if it is pried apart and thrown in whole. A 10-by-12 shed is the same order of magnitude: four walls, a floor, trusses and a roof, plus whatever was inside it. Either one is a 15 yard; both at once, or a large two-level deck, is a 20 yard. Taking a fence out at the same time adds a load or two. The trick that keeps the box small is stacking: cut or unscrew the lumber into lengths, lay it flat, and a 15 yard swallows a deck that would overflow a 20 thrown in as whole sections.

What does a deck weigh, and what about the footings?
Pressure-treated lumber runs about 2.5 to 3 pounds per board foot, and a 200-square-foot deck with its framing is somewhere around 1,500 to 2,500 pounds, under the 1.75 tons allowance with room for the shed. Composite decking is heavier per board than wood, about 60 to 70 pounds a 16-foot plank, so a big composite deck can reach a ton and a half on its own. A wood shed with a shingled roof is a few hundred pounds of framing and sheathing and a few hundred more of shingles.
The footings are a different material. A poured pier is 100 to 300 pounds each, and a deck can have twelve of them. A 10-by-12 shed slab four inches thick is about 1.5 cubic yards of concrete, roughly 3 tons. Concrete and the dirt around it are heavy debris: accepted in the 10 yard at no handling charge, loaded partway and below the marked fill line, and carrying a $150 handling charge in any box over 10 yards. So the clean plan is a 15 for the structure and, if the slab or the piers are coming out, a separate 10 for them. What from a deck or shed cannot go in?
Pressure-treated and untreated lumber, composite decking, plywood, siding, shingles, metal roofing, a metal or resin shed, screen, railing, lattice, fence panels and posts all go in as construction debris. The refused items are what was stored in the shed.
- Gasoline, two-stroke mix, oil, the mower and trimmer with fuel in them: drain them or leave them out; petroleum products and flammables are refused
- Paint, stain, deck sealer, pesticides, fertilizer, pool chemicals: hazardous, and the county's household hazardous waste program takes them
- Propane cylinders and the grill tank, tires and the mower battery
- An old chest freezer or a second fridge in the shed: appliances are not permitted in a roll-off; appliance removal handles them
- Posts with the concrete still on them: fine in the 10 yard, but they count as heavy debris in a bigger box; knock the concrete off or bag the footings separately
How long does the demolition take?
A deck comes down in a day with a drill, a pry bar and a reciprocating saw; a shed takes a morning once it is empty. Order the box for the morning you start and call for pickup when it is loaded; the truck comes in the 7-day window. Homeowners spreading the job over two weekends keep the box the full week at no extra charge, and past that it is $30 a day up to 30 days. Placement and ordering
As close to the backyard gate as the truck can set it, which usually means the driveway on the side nearest the deck. Carrying deck boards around the house is the slow part of the job, so the shorter the walk the better.
