Which size for a roof tear-off?
Roofers measure in squares, and one square is 100 square feet of roof. Count the squares, count the layers coming off, and the size follows. The 20 yard is the roofing box: 16 feet long, 5 feet tall so the crew can throw into it from a ladder, and it holds a full single-layer tear-off on most Orlando homes with room to spare. How do squares turn into tons?
Torn-off asphalt shingles, with the felt, the nails and the odd piece of rotten decking, run somewhere between 200 and 350 pounds per square depending on the product; architectural shingles sit at the top of that range. Use 300 pounds a square as the planning number. A 20-square roof is then about 6,000 pounds, or 3 tons. A 25-square roof is closer to 3.75 tons. Two layers on a 20-square roof is 6 tons.
Now hold that against the allowance. The 20 yard includes 2 tons, so a 20-square single-layer roof is about a ton over, billed at $83 per ton from the landfill scale ticket: $83, sometimes $166 on a bigger roof. That is the whole reason shingles blow allowances: the box is nowhere near full when the weight passes 2 tons, and roofers who fill it to the line are usually 3 or 4 tons in. Any overage is billed to the card on file after the landfill weighs the load. Nobody guesses; the scale decides.
The 10 yard makes the same point harder. Fifteen squares weigh about 2 tons against a 1 ton allowance, so a 10 yard full of shingles is normally a ton over. What from a roof cannot go in the box?
Almost everything that comes off a roof is fine: shingles, underlayment, felt, drip edge, flashing, gutters, rotten decking, plywood, fascia, vents and the cardboard the new shingles came in. Three things are not.
