Dumpster for a moving cleanout

For the purge before a move, the furniture that is not worth moving, the garage and closets, the things the buyers do not want left behind, order a 15 yard: $450 delivered with 1.75 tons and 7 days included. Have it dropped a few days before the movers and picked up the day after. A whole house being emptied rather than moved is a 20. Call (407) 860-8640.

Which size for a move?

A move-out cleanout is the opposite of a whole-house cleanout: most of the house is leaving on a truck, and the dumpster gets what is not. That is usually the old mattress and the sofa that will not survive another move, the contents of the garage and the closets, patio furniture, the kids' outgrown things, the boxes in the attic that have moved twice unopened, and the last-day pile of cleaning supplies and half-used everything. For a house, that comes to four or five pickup loads, the 15 yard. An apartment or a condo makes do with a 10. A house that is being emptied entirely because the owners are downsizing or the move is out of state and the furniture is not coming is a 20 yard, and the whole-house cleanout page is the better guide.

How do I time it around the movers?

Order the box for three or four days before moving day. That gives the purge its own days, so the movers arrive to a house that holds only what is going, and the packing goes faster because nobody is boxing things to throw away later. Call for pickup the day after the movers leave; the last-day debris, the packing paper, the broken lamp, the garage floor sweepings and the cleaning bottles, goes in that morning, and the truck takes the box in the 7-day window. Seven days covers a purge weekend plus moving day plus the sweep-out with room to spare, and if a closing date slides, the box stays at $30 a day up to 30 days. A request in by 2pm is usually delivered the same day inside the core area; the rental-length guide covers the calendar in detail.

Where does the box go when the moving truck needs the driveway?

This is the one placement question that is specific to a move. A 15 yard is 15 feet long and 8 feet wide; a moving truck wants the driveway or the curb in front of the house on moving day; and both need the same 34 feet of straight approach. On a double driveway, set the box on the side away from the front door and the truck parks on the other. On a single driveway, set the box at the top, near the garage, and the movers park at the curb, which they usually prefer anyway for the ramp. If the only spot is the street, that involves the city, and the placement guide explains what to ask before you book. Tell the moving company where the dumpster will be when you confirm them, and keep the truck's path to the box clear on pickup day: a truck that cannot reach the box is a $150 trip charge and a return trip nobody wants during a move.

What does a moving cleanout dumpster cost, all in?

$450 for the 15 yard, with delivery, pickup, 1.75 tons and 7 days inside it. Moving debris is the lightest load a dumpster carries, so weight charges are rare; the extras that occasionally show up are days when a closing moves, and a second box when the garage held more than it looked like.

What does a move weigh, and what stays out?

Mattresses, sofas, boxes, clothes and toys are bulk without weight; a full 15 yard of move-out debris is usually a ton or less, inside the 1.75 tons allowance. The two things that push a move heavy are a home gym (plates and a cast-iron bench are a quarter ton on their own) and yard material from the garage, such as pavers, block or bags of concrete that set. Those belong in a 10 yard on their own, where heavy debris is accepted at no charge, not in the 15, where it carries a $150 handling charge. Over the allowance is $83 per ton from the scale ticket.

What cannot go in is the same short list as any house: appliances (the old fridge in the garage, a window unit, the water heater, all handled by appliance removal instead), tires and car batteries, and the shelf of paint, gasoline, propane, pool chemicals and pesticides that every move discovers at the last minute; those go to the county's household hazardous waste program, and moving companies will not carry them either.

How do I order?

Call (407) 860-8640 or use the quote form with the moving date, the address and a sentence about what is not making the truck. Javi's sets the delivery day to give you the purge days before the movers, and pickup the day after. We keep a card on file for every rental and email your invoice — pay by debit or credit card. We don't take cash or checks. Every fee is on the pricing page. When the move is really a garage problem, the garage cleanout page has the long list of what the landfill refuses, most of which lives in a garage.

Questions people ask

What size dumpster for moving out?

A 15 yard, $450 with 1.75 tons included, for the furniture, garage and closets that are not going on the truck. An apartment fits a 10; a house being emptied entirely is a 20.

When should the dumpster arrive before a move?

Three or four days before the movers, so the purge has its own days. Call for pickup the day after moving day; 7 days are included.

Will the dumpster block the moving truck?

Not if you plan the driveway: box at the top near the garage, movers at the curb; or box on one side of a double driveway. Tell the moving company where it will be.

Can the movers' leftover boxes and packing paper go in?

Yes. Cardboard, paper, bubble wrap and broken items are household waste. Flatten the boxes so they do not take the whole container.

Is junk removal better than a dumpster for a move?

For a few large pieces, often yes: junk removal is quoted by the job and the crew does the carrying. For a garage and closets full of things, the dumpster is cheaper.
